Online Personal Training vs Small Group PT: Which Is Right for You?
You want to get stronger.
Improve your fitness.
Maybe lose some body fat.
And finally get back into a decent training routine.
But there’s another question that often comes before deciding what exercises to do:
What type of coaching actually suits you?
For some people online personal training is ideal.
For others having a session booked in a gym and a coach standing in front of them makes all the difference.
Neither option is automatically better.
The best one is the one that fits your goals personality schedule and training experience.
At Templetown Strength & Conditioning we offer both Online Rebuild coaching and Small Group Personal Training in Carlingford.
Here’s how to work out which might suit you.
Why Motivation Usually Isn’t The Real Problem
Most adults who come to me aren’t complete beginners.
They’ve trained before.
Maybe they played sport.
Maybe they spent years going to the gym.
They often know the basic exercises and understand that staying active is important.
Then life changed.
Work became busier.
Children arrived.
Training slipped down the priority list.
Maybe an old back knee or shoulder problem knocked their confidence.
Training became inconsistent.
Eventually they find themselves saying:
“I need to get back at it.”
The instinct is usually to look for more motivation.
But motivation isn’t particularly reliable.
The better solution is to build a training system that reduces how much motivation you need.
And that’s where choosing the right style of coaching matters.
Option 1: Online Personal Training

Online coaching works particularly well for someone who wants flexibility but doesn’t want to programme everything themselves.
You might already be comfortable inside a gym.
You know how to squat press row and deadlift.
But you’re unsure how everything should fit together.
Or maybe you’ve spent years bouncing between random workouts without making consistent progress.
Good online coaching removes that guesswork.
How our Online Rebuild works
With my Online Rebuild we don’t simply email you a generic PDF and wish you luck.
We start with an in-person assessment at Templetown Strength & Conditioning where possible.
That gives me a much better picture of where you’re actually starting.
We can look at things such as:
- Your current strength
- Your fitness
- Your movement
- Your training history
- Your injury history
- Your goals
- Your available equipment
- Your realistic weekly schedule
From there I build your individual programme.
You then train around your own life.
The important part is what happens afterwards.
We check in regularly and adjust the programme based on what is actually happening.
Because no 12-week programme ever goes exactly according to plan.
Work gets busy.
You travel.
Something starts niggling.
Your training availability changes.
Your programme should be able to change too.
Who is online coaching best for?
Online personal training may suit you if:
- You enjoy training independently
- You already have some gym experience
- You have an unpredictable schedule
- You travel regularly
- You don’t live close to your coach
- You want an individual programme
- You need accountability without fixed gym appointments
- You want help with training nutrition and recovery
The major advantage is flexibility.
You aren’t tied to a specific training time.
That can make online coaching particularly useful for busy professionals parents shift workers and people whose weeks regularly change.
But flexibility has another side.
You still have to get yourself to the gym.
For some people that’s absolutely fine.
For others it’s exactly where the wheels come off.
Which brings us to option two.
Option 2: Small Group Personal Training

Small Group Personal Training sits somewhere between traditional 1-to-1 PT and a large fitness class.
You get the atmosphere of training alongside other people with far more individual coaching than you’d normally expect from a class.
At Templetown our SGPT sessions are capped at 12 people.
Members train through the same general programme but exercises and loads can be adjusted to suit the individual.
That means the person who has trained for ten years doesn’t necessarily need the exact same variation as someone returning after a long break.
And someone with a previous back knee or shoulder issue doesn’t automatically have to avoid strength training.
We find the appropriate starting point.
Who is Small Group PT best for?
SGPT may suit you if:
- You struggle to train consistently on your own
- You like having sessions booked into your week
- You want a coach watching your technique
- You enjoy training around other people
- You want structure without needing 1-to-1 PT
- You haven’t trained for a while
- You feel unsure about returning after an injury
- You want someone else to take care of the session
The biggest benefit isn’t necessarily the exercises.
It’s the structure.
Your session is booked.
You turn up.
The programme is ready.
You get coached.
You train.
You leave.
There are far fewer decisions to make.
And that can be extremely powerful for consistency.
What if you’ve had back pain or another injury?
This is one of the reasons people sometimes delay returning to strength training.
They’ve previously hurt their back or knee and they’re understandably cautious.
But having had an injury doesn’t automatically mean you should permanently avoid strength training.
It means the starting point matters.
Depending on the individual we might adjust:
- Exercise selection
- Load
- Range of motion
- Tempo
- Volume
- Training frequency
Then gradually build your capacity from there.
The goal isn’t to prove how tough you are.
It’s to progressively become stronger and more confident.
What about fat loss?
Whichever coaching option you choose training is only one part of the picture.
If fat loss is one of your goals we also need to look at nutrition.
You don’t need an extreme diet.
You need something you can consistently follow.
That usually involves getting the basics right:
- Eating enough protein
- Including plenty of fruit and vegetables
- Managing portions
- Planning meals when possible
- Staying active outside the gym
- Having a sensible strategy for weekends
Sleep stress recovery and mobility matter too.
That’s why I prefer looking at the whole person rather than simply handing someone three workouts and hoping for the best.
Online PT vs Small Group PT: Which should you choose?
Here’s the simplest way I can put it.
Choose online coaching if:
You want flexibility.
You can train independently but want an individual programme accountability and coaching around the process.
Choose SGPT if:
You want structure.
You want sessions booked into your week where you can turn up get coached and train alongside others.
Neither approach wins automatically.
And there are people who could succeed with either.
The question is:
Which setup are you most likely to keep doing?
Because that’s ultimately what matters.
“You don’t need more motivation“,
That’s the message I keep coming back to.
You don’t need another burst of motivation followed by six weeks of training and another six months off.
You need training that fits your life.
I recently broke down both coaching options in a simple Instagram carousel here:
